It is worth keeping a few key Vastu principles in mind when evaluating a home. Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of architecture based on Hindu and Buddhist beliefs; even for buyers who don’t follow these principles personally, many tenants and future buyers look for homes that comply with them.
1. Prioritise the entrance — According to Vastu experts, a T-junction directly facing the house is considered inauspicious. Look for a home where the road does not lead directly into the house, though planting trees can sometimes correct this.
2. Choose a regular-shaped plot — An irregular plot often results in a missing direction or corner. Rectangular or square-shaped homes are generally considered excellent choices under Vastu guidelines.
3. Look for open space to the north or east — A façade facing north or east is considered a potential harbinger of fortune and good opportunities.
4. Ensure sunlight and ventilation — Easy flow of sunlight and ventilation is crucial. Kitchens especially should have cross ventilation and ideally sit in the south-east corner of the home.
5. Keep bedrooms clutter-free — Bedrooms, especially the bed, should be free of clutter. It is believed bedrooms should be in the south-west part of the house, with the sleeper’s head pointing south.
6. Plan children’s rooms to the north-west — If you have children, or plan to, a bedroom in the north-west part of the home is considered favourable.
7. Bathrooms in the north-west — Vastu Shastra suggests bathrooms be located in the north-west part of the house.
8. Avoid obstructed north-east sunlight — Buy a home that isn’t blocked to the north-east by hills or tall towers, since a lack of sunlight is believed to indicate misfortune and ill health. Hills or towers to the north-west, by contrast, are considered favourable for good health and fortune.
